Develop an application which should be able to interface with different means of storing data (e.g. different database structures)?

Question

I am developing a web application where it has a specification that states:

It should as flexible as possible, it should be able to interface with different means of storing data (e.g. different database structures).

I'm not really too sure what this means and wondering if anyone can explain (university student and new to web application development). At the moment I have built a MySQL database for the purposes of building the application.

I'm not sure if it means it should be able to interface with non-relational, hierarchy databases as well. Does this mean I would need to write different queries for multiple types of database structure?
